Earlier this week, Shell Recharge notified North American customers that its Shell Sky™ CPMS will discontinue services on April 30, 2025. This gives fleets, utilities, and other site hosts approximately 90 business days to migrate to a new back-end provider for EV charger management.
Today, ChargeLab is announcing support for Shell Recharge customers seeking a new charging management system. Site hosts should contact ChargeLab to learn about turnkey migration services.
Background on Shell Sky™
Shell Sky™ is a cloud-based software for managing electric vehicle chargers, often called a charge point management system (CPMS) or charging station management system (CSMS). Sky™ was originally created by software startup Greenlots, which was acquired by Shell in 2019. In 2021, Shell rebranded Greenlots to Shell Recharge Solutions, later shortened to Shell Recharge.
Site hosts in fleet, commercial, government, and utility segments use Shell Sky™ to administer their EV chargers. Key features include power management, proactive alerts, a network activity dashboard, and various types of reports on EV charger usage. While these features will be discontinued on April 30, 2025, site hosts can ensure ongoing service by migrating to ChargeLab.
Shell Recharge is shutting down services for third-party businesses that use its Shell Sky™ software, but the company will continue to operate and grow its Shell-owned public charging network. A Senior Vice President at the company recently announced that it has reached “70,000 public Shell Recharge charge points around the world.”
ChargeLab’s migration services
ChargeLab is a hardware-agnostic software platform for managing EV chargers. Its mission is to solve smart EV charging at scale. ChargeLab’s customers include fleets, property managers, convenience stores, and utilities.
ChargeLab’s software and Shell Sky™ both use OCPP, an open protocol for connecting and managing EV chargers. This means that most Shell Recharge customers can seamlessly migrate to ChargeLab either through remote or on-site reconfiguration of EV chargers. ChargeLab supports over 100 EV charger models built by dozens of manufacturers, including ABB, Autel, BTC POWER, Eaton, Lite-On, Wallbox, Zerova, and others.
ChargeLab’s team assists customers with a previous network migration
ChargeLab recently completed the migration of over 1,400 JuiceBox EV chargers following a similar shutdown announcement from Enel X Way. ChargeLab has also migrated large networks of EV chargers from Shell Recharge in the past.
“We applaud Shell’s decision to notify customers at least 90 days before turning off its software,” said Shaun Stewart, ChargeLab’s President. “At the same time, this remains a short window to complete the steps necessary to migrate to a new back-end. We encourage customers using Shell Sky™ to contact us as soon as possible to start the migration process.”
Based on the company’s learnings from the recent Enel X Way migration, ChargeLab is offering a turnkey migration service for Shell Recharge customers. This includes new software that meets or exceeds the capabilities of Shell Sky™, 24/7 EV driver support, and on-site migration support when needed. ChargeLab also partners with ChargerHelp, a company that provides comprehensive O&M plans to replace legacy Shell Sky™ Care maintenance plans.
Next steps
Fleet, commercial, government, and utility site hosts using Shell Sky™ are encouraged to contact ChargeLab to discuss network migration.
Shell Recharge public charging sites will continue to operate as normal. Shell has stated that discontinuing the Sky™ CPMS will allow it to focus on growing its Shell-owned public charging network.
ChargeLab and Shell are not affiliated. This news release was not drafted or endorsed by Shell. ChargeLab can migrate EV chargers currently managed by Shell Recharge thanks to OCPP, the open protocol that both services use.
